Fine & Ultra Fine Wire
PI Medical offers an array of medical grade wires in a range of diameters to meet unique customer applications. Our precious metal wires can be fabricated into many forms including micro coils, straight length rods or pins, depending on customer need. Customers choose from stock wire in standard diameters from .00087” to .125”; stock alloys of gold, platinum, palladium and silver; or request custom fabrications. Depending on the application, PI Medical can be fabricated to meet the exacting standards of ASTM.
Fine and ultra-fine wire diameter definitions are not standardized in the wire fabrication industry. There are relative terms that depend on industrial application. However, the common trend in leading edge wire applications is miniaturization with its own subset of diameter definition. The following provides the distinction between the two wire options:
- PI Medical defines wire as fine when the diameter ranges between 0.005” (0.127mm) to 0.002” (0.05mm) in diameter
- Ultra-fine wire is defined as anything below 0.002” (0.05mm) in diameter.
Common applications that require PI Medical’s fine and ultra-fine wire products are pacemakers, implantable cardiac defibrillators, neuromodulators, and spinal cord stimulators.
